So, the Major League Baseball All-Star game will be held this coming Tuesday, July 12, and as much as I enjoy the game for its competition, pomp and circumstance, I hate or strongly dislike the process where the fans get to choose the 9 starters for each team.
The players themselves and the managers thereof choose the remaining team members, and from that standpoint, it's a fairly straight forward deal, where the deserving players are chosen.
Yet the fans choose players based on "fandom", my favorite player is Alex Rodriguez, because he hung the moon (la la la la); not to mention, that larger fan bases like Boston and New York have the ability to choose players based on this "fandom" idea as opposed to someone who truly deserves to be there based on effort and performance thus far. A-Rod by the way is batting .295 this year with 13 HR and 52 RBI, a good year, but not the best at his position overall...that nod would go to either Adrian Beltre or Kevin Youkilis.
I just don't like that fact that instead of the all-star game showcasing the best of the best, it instead is a popularity contest. As my Mom would say: "Too bad, so sad"!
